Death By Sugar

As college students, we never forget the fact that stressed spelled backwards is desserts, adhering to the idea that the stress caused from those massive amounts of papers and midterms should be alleviated by desserts, also known as sugar overload. We grab a piece of chocolate from under our desk every five minutes, convincing ourselves that the one piece that turns into ten won’t hurt.

Think again, students. These spoonfuls of sugar found in those delicious chocolatey cookies can cause what is known as metabolic syndrome, an indicator of obesity. According to UC researchers, 50 billion people suffer from this disorder which also includes diabetes, heart disease and fatty liver. Ever wonder where the “freshman fifteen” saying comes from?

Consuming huge amounts of fructose also leads to an “apple- shaped body.” No, body shapes are not only important when it comes to image. People with an apple- shaped body are also more likely to develop health problems and obesity.

Long story short, slow down on all those “yum yums!”
