PayScale Rankings Diss Berkeley

We here at the Clog love college rankings, especially the ones that rank Berkeley at the top [1] — or at least above Stanford. So when we heard that PayScale [2] recently announced college rankings based on graduate salaries, we couldn’t wait to see our wonderful institution of higher learning at the top. Think about it: another high ranking to brag about (see mom and dad, these loans are totally worth it!) and the promise of a high salary. Talk about a win-win.

But then we saw the rankings, and boy were we disappointed. When ranked by mid-career median salaries, UC Berkeley came in 36th place with a score of $102,000. And, unless you would rather just compare UC Berkeley to other state schools (where’s the fun in that?), it only gets worse.

UC Berkeley ranked somewhere in the 60s (it’s hard to scroll and count!) for starting median salaries, scoring in at $51,400. MIT, which ranked number one in that category, apparently has a starting median salary of $69,700. But it’s only around $20,000 more, and who wants to go to MIT anyway? It’s like totally cold there and our clock tower is super tall!

BTW, Stanford scored much higher in both categories and even the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology scored higher than us. What the heck?!

PayScale, we’re not a fan; and next time try numbering your damn rankings.
