Last week a man was hit by a car while trying to cross Telegraph Avenue and Blake Street. Severely injured, the man died Friday, according to police.

Police have not yet released the man’s name, but say that he was in his 40s. The man was taken to Highland Hospital after the accident.

This adds to the grim reality of what looks like an unusual number of deaths in the city of Berkeley since the beginning of the summer.

* The first death of the summer was discovered in early May, when a body was found near some old train tracks in West Berkeley.

* Police found the body of 46 year old Terrence Broadnax in an apartment in Downtown Berkeley a few weeks ago.

* The body of a man was discovered off the Berkeley pier.

* An elderly woman died after being hit by a car.

* And probably the most shocking (but it doesn’t take away the magnitude or importance of the others), the suspected “murder-suicide” of a Berkeley family also occurred last month.

We asked this before, and we’ll ask it again: What the hell is going on?

Yesterday, a body was found in the San Francisco Bay off the Berkeley pier.

A boater first spotted the body at about 9:30 a.m. and notified the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard retrieved the body, but the coroner has yet to identify the man or pinpoint the cause of his death.

We except more details to come, but that’s all (and we mean ALL) that the Chron’s reporting right now.

Update, 9:00 p.m.: The Daily Cal updated early this afternoon saying that the Homicide Unit is now handling the case, according to Berkeley police Lt. Wesley “A week prior we had a report of a person seen jumping into the water off the Berkeley Pier,” Hester said. “We went down and investigated and never found the person, we’re not sure if that incident coincides with the body washing up, but it is a possibility.”

The Chron doesn’t have anything else up.

First we had a bad week for bloggers. Now Berkeley’s residents are having an even worse week.
